Aftermath

On April 16, 400 years of history, art, and culture was destroyed within an hour in a blaze, when the ‘Børsen’ building in central Copenhagen went up in flames. The building was commissioned by the Danish king, Christian IV and completed in its first version (not materially different from how it looks present-day) in 1624.

Over the centuries, it has been gently developed and modified – mainly inside – and until April 16, 2024, the building and its dragon-spire were among the most famous and recognizable landmarks in Copenhagen.

On the early morning of April 21 – 5 days after the blaze – what was left of the building was still smoldering and smoking, and the work clearing up the site and assess what can be rescued was underway.
